ST PHILIP'S CHURCH OF ENGLAND SCHOOL

St Philip's School is a popular local church primary school

Its Christian hertitage is soundly based in the foundation of the school with those who serve on the governing body mainly local people, a number being parents of children at the school. The foundation governors have the responsibility to uphold the Christian foundation of the school.

We are often looking for people willing to be a school governor - as those who have served for a number of years stand down. People often see this as a 'ministry 'since it is a key role in helping to oversee the life and work of the school

We have a wonderful staff, led by an excellent head, newly appointed in 2004. The school had an excellent OFSTED report and we are proud of the hard work done through the school.

St Philip's School is a Church of England primary school which has been serving the Romsey community for 119 years. We currently have approximately 315 pupils, aged 3 to 11, and 33 teaching and support staff.

Visitors comment that St Philip's is a welcoming school and we aim that all pupils should fulfill their potential and grow up to be responsible members of society. We are committed to raising the achievement of all pupils, in all areas of the curriculum, developing the whole child. We hope that you find the information on this website helpful.

We do welcome visits from prospective parents who wish to see the school in action. Please telephone the school office (01223 508707) to arrange a convienent appointment.

.Educating the Whole Child

St Philips School were delighted to receive an International School Award in recognition of their work to develop the global dimension of the curriculum. . Mrs Binnes, who led the project, went to London on 10th October to collect the award. For several years the school has had links with Gbanyamni Primary school in Ghana. An anthology of traditional tales, retold by pupils from both schools and an international recipe book containing favourite recipes from around the world were published. The international evening attended by 150 parents and children was great occasion

Take One Picture, a project run by the National Gallery, where one of its pictures is used as an inspiration for curriculum work. This creative week, gave children opportunities to think for themselves and pose questions to develop their learning.

This year a study of “Autumn landscape with view of Het Steen” by Peter Paul Rubens resulted in the children:

• producing a film (Year 5/6);

• writing group stories (Year 5);

• making model castles with working circuits (Year 4);

• writing puppet plays and making puppet theatres(Year 3/4);

• composing music based on the sounds in the picture (Year 3);

• writing character studies (Year 2);

• finding out about the animals and using them as a stimulus for maths (Year1);

• and designing and making their own castles (Reception).

Fit For Life Week.

All the children were lent a pedometer for a week and challenged to record the number of steps they took each day, to see if they could increase them. They held a sponsored skip to raise money for the British Heart Foundation; attempted virtual rowing and had a “Let’s Get Fit” community event with French skipping, football skills, parachute games, flexicise, running club, circuit training and ideas for healthy packed lunches.

Siobhan Rouse, the head of St Philips said, ‘We hope that by involving children and families in a wide range of exciting learning opportunities we motivate them to achieve their best and prove that every aspect of every child’s development matters.’
